A Hidden Treasure – Tesoro Escondido
This was our second visit to Bajos Del Toro as this place has many beautiful rivers and waterfalls. We talked about Catarata del Toro earlier.Another beautiful waterfall is Tesoro Escondido.
About this Place:
It is hard to believe but most of these waterfalls are owned by the locals. Tesoro Escondido is also owned by a Costarican family. This place has been private for many years.Tesoro Escondido translates to Hidden treasure and the name does complete justice.
I assumed it to be one tiny little waterfall but was really surprised by its beauty when we got there. To be honest I loved it even more than Rio Celeste 😛
Level of hike is quite easy. They offer a 15-minute horse ride as well. We spent roughly 3 hours in this place.
Our Story:
On the way to Catarata Del Toro, we lost our way and happened to stop at entrance to Tesoro Escondido, to get directions. I was amazed to see the number of people hiking back from Tesoro Escondido. Curiosity kicked in and I bookmarked this place. The very next week we came back along with a friend to explore this hidden treasure.
On Aug 4th, 2018, we left late from our house in San Jose towards Bajos Del Toro and got there around 12 PM.We parked our vehicle, booked our tickets and were ready to head off. The guy at the counter gave a quick explanation of what to expect / do and informed us that we will meet 2 coordinators along the way who will assist and guide us to the waterfalls.
As we walked few meters, we reached a hanging bridge. This is where we got our first glimpse of light blue river.
The hiking paths is so beautiful. Here are some pictures for you.
We continued our walk and reached an amazing pasture where we met one of the coordinators coming towards us on a horse. He asked us if any of us would like to ride the horse. Sure, why not!
We happily took turns. It was an awesome experience. As the plain land was coming to an end, the coordinator stopped his horse next to the other horses, where we met their dogs. They were running around in the field.
As we walked past the field, the coordinator guided us till we reached the next coordinator. We had to cross the river water at many places. Getting into water is unavoidable so be ready to be wet 😀
The Coordinator stopped to show us an amazing pond. It had a Cave-like structure. The sound of water echoes due to the caves. We did not get into water here. We walked further to see Waterfalls.
There was one challenging area where we had to hold a rope to get down. This is where we met the 2nd coordinator.
We crossed a big stream and heard the water roaring on our right. As we got closer, the sound got louder, and as the falls came into sight my jaws literally dropped. The waterfall is huge. It flows into a blue pool.
We spent some time admiring the waterfall and capturing some images.
After which we got ready to jump into the pool.  As our feet touched the water, we shivered, the water was Ice cold 😀 There was no way I could swim there. Still we all took a dip in the icy water with our GoPros. The water was completely blue.
We enjoyed every bit there. We sat down to have a few snacks while admired the waterfall.
After enjoying for about an hour it was time to head back. The walk back took us around 40 minutes, as we stopped again and again to get pictures.
